| 21 April 1894 The crime was reported in the Staffordshire Chronicle Saturday 21 April 1894 p.7 col.6: A DISHONEST APPRENTICE. - Frederick Bickley (15), living at Jubilee Cottages, Friars Road, was charged with stealing money, the property of Philip Dale, ironmonger, of Greengate Street. - The prosecutor gave evidence to the effect that the defendant had been in his employ for nearly three years, the latter two years as an apprentice under indentures. On April 2 he found that his cash box had been taken from the desk in the shop, and stood upon the top. Upon examining it, he missed from 10s. to £1 of the money which it previously contained. He had previously missed money from the box. On the following Tuesday defendant absented himself from work. Prosecutor went to the police station and there saw the defendant. As soon as he saw prosecutor he ran away. - P.c. Edwin Fletcher, stationed at Milford, said from information he received,. he arrested the defendant at Milford on Friday, and charged him with stealing money the property of Mr. Dale. ln answer to the charge defendant said "I stole 18s. 6d. altogether; but Mr. Dale only knows to 14s. 6d., which I stole on Saturday, March 24. The other 4s. I stole on the Thursday before." Defendant also said he went into the shop on the Monday following Easter (April 2), and opened the till, but hearing Mr. Dale coming, he ran out of the shop and did not take any. - Defendant upon being charged, pleaded guilty, and decided to be dealt with summarily. - The Bench decided to send defendant to a reformatory until he was 19 years of age. | |
