28 April 1894 There is a short report of the crime in the Staffordshire Advertiser Saturday 28 April 1894 p.6 col.6: THEFT FROM A BOAT. - George Hewson, 14, was charged with stealing 3s. 6d. and a shirt, belonging to John Meredith, boatman. The prisoner was assisting the prosecutor to work the boat, and on the night of the 31st of March, while the boat was lying at Barlaston, the boy absconded, taking the money and a new shirt. It was stated that the boy was the son of a County Court Bailiff at Walsall and had a good home, but would not stay at home. The Bench sent him to gaol for seven days and to a reformatory for four years.
