| 12 December 1885 There was a report of the crime in the Birmingham Daily Post Saturday 12 December 1885 p.6 col.7: BIRMINGHAM POLICE COURT, - YESTERDAY. Before Messrs. Kynnersley (Stip.), Ellis, Mason, Phillips, and Goodman. CIGAR STEALING..- Frank Heaton (13) [surname spelled thus], schoolboy, Great Hampton Street, and Richard Dayas (12), schoolboy, Brearley Street, were charged with stealing ??? cigars, value 15s., the property of the London and North Western Railway Company. - A youth named William Hall said that he saw the two prisoners enter one of the refreshment bars at New Street Station on the 3rd inst. Dayas took a box of cigars from a shelf, and with his companion decamped. Witness caught Dayas, who had the cigars concealed under his coat, and Heaton was arrested immediately afterwards. - Heaton, who has previously been in trouble, and against whom there were many other charges of theft, was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment and five years in a reformatory. Dayas was discharged. | |
