Ernest is listed as dying of shrapnel wounds to his right side and a compound fracture of the ribs at the North Evington War Hospital, Leicester on 10th July 1916. The newspaper article below states that Ernest was wounded in the "big advance" a term along with the "big push" used to describe the Battle of the Somme, which means that Ernest was wounded on or after 1st July 1916 and then evacuated to Leicester before the 10th July 1916. The war diary shows that the 10th Battalion suffered casualties on the 2nd & 3rd July and then on the 5th July they went into billets and reserve for rest and reorganisation and they did not go back into the front lines until 19th July 1916. The war diary entries for the 2nd and 3rd are transcribed below. War Diary - 2 Jul 1916Front Line NW of La-Boisselle – 2 Jul 1916: Sunday. The Battalion took over the front line from Keats Redan to Argyll Street (see map), holding the line with 3 Coys and having one in support. Orders were then received that the attack would start at 2.15am on the 3rd. The Battalion was to be Brigade reserve and occupy the front line. The enemy shelled our front line heavily causing us to have a few casualties. In the evening the 2nd in Command, one Coy Commander and two other officers were sent forward to help organise the attack. Casualties – Officers: Killed Cyril George Williams; Wounded Frederick Rance; Shell Shock Richard James Mesney. Men: Killed 5; Wounded 31; Missing 9 (6 known to be wounded & alive); shell shock 3 Reinforcements: 2nd Lt’s A. A. Cavins, A.N. Donnett; C.E. Clarke. War Diary - 3 Jul 1916In the Line - La Boisselle - 3/7/16 - Monday: At 2.15am the N Staffs started to clear up the village of La Boisselle and the 10th Worcesters attacked the German frontline between Albert-Poziere Road and branch running under the bank. The Gloucesters were in reserve. The Germans shelled our frontline heavily. At 8am C & D Companies led by Capt Shaw went up to support the the Gloucesters, one Coy on the right and the other on the left to clear up the situation in the village. The two remaining companies A&B went further along our frontline to the right to enable part of the Bn of S Lancs to take over our frontline. B Company was then sent up to support. At 12.30pm the remaining company went over and our frontline was entirely held by the S Lancs. At this time we were holding a line from X.13.d.10.7 South along trench towards left of La Boisselle. Alternately support was asked for and obtained whilst we consolidated our line. At 3pm the C.O was wounded and at 8.30 Major A. N. Henderson took over the Command. Between 3pm & 8.30pm the Bn was under the CO of the Gloucesters. Other ranks Casualties 27 including Edward. |
