Circumstances of Death

George is listed as dying of wounds at the 38th Casualty Clearing Station on 6 Nov 1918. The Brigade war diary indicates that George [who was in B/307] was wounded on the 4 Nov 1918 by bombs dropped duing an air raid. The war diary entry for the 4th is transcribed below. There are no recorded casualties on the 5th or 6th.

In the field near Maresches Map Ref 51A - 4th Nov 1918: Batteries moved forward per Appendix III and supported operation by 24th Division as per appendix IV. The run through Maresches and into action was achieved without difficulty & with no casualties & batteries were able to take up firing the barrage at the appointed time.

At 0800 fire ceased & previous to this one Howitzer of D/307 was a premature wounding 6 men, one very seriously and this man died later on [not George - see below].

At 1600 hours two bombs were dropped by an unknown aeroplane near B/307 wagon lines about L.26.a.4.4.with disastrous results. 2 men killed; 17 wounded some very seriously [including George] and over 30 horses killed or wounded. Pieces of the bombs were picked up and forwarded to higher authority. END
