Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The 1st Battalion spend the period July 1915 to June 1916 in and out of the trenches near Mailley-Maillet and there were no set battles during this time but there was constant shelling and local actions.
The war diary shows that on the day Charles was killed (12 Dec 1915) the battalion were in the trenches at Ellis Square nr Mailley-Maillet, Sucrerie. Charles was the only man killed that day after he was hit by a shell landing in or near the trench he was in.
