Circumstances of Death

Walter is listed as being killed in action on 28th March 1918. The 8th Battalion war diary entries for the period 25th March to 29th March are transcribed below.

Grevillers – 25 Mar 1918: Enemy attacked 4 times. 19th Division fought a rear guard action from Grevillers through Irles and Miraumont to a line Puisieux – Achiet le Petit.

Fonquevillers  - 26 Mar 1918: Rearguard action continued to a line Hebuterne – Bucquoy which was reached in the early morning and held. 19th Division became Division Reserve between Bayencourt and Fonquevillers.

Fonquevillers - 27 Mar 1918: Battalion in support to Anzacs before Fonquevillers. Enemy held by fresh troops.

Doullens - 28 Mar 1918: The Battalion withdrew to neighbourhood of Doullens. Casualties Killed: 2 Officers and 3 OR’s; Wounded 9 Officers and 169 Other Ranks

Doullens – 29 Mar 1918: Entrained for Strazeele
