Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action near Courcelette on 29th September 1916. The 19th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Destremont Farm - 29 Sep 1916: At 12.35 am the Battalion was called on to establish three posts with Lewis Guns at M.10.a.5.5, M.14.c.4.5, and M.14.c.1.4. Lt. J.A. Linton, Capt. G.M. F.R. Newman wounded.

10 am. Our position was being considerably shelled with 5.9 and 4.1 which resulted in heavy casualties.

11.05 am, we were advised that the 123rd Division were in possession of Destremont Farm. In M.21. "C" Company of the 19th Battalion pushed out two posts between its right flank and the farm to connect & maintain communications. The new positions continued to be heavily shelled from the direction of PYS, and digging in and holding was strenuously persisted in.

At 7.55 pm orders were received from the Canadian Corps H.Q. for the Division to construct a line facing N. from Destremont Farm (M.21.c) to S. practise trenches, preparation made for a further forward push. The 20th Battalion on our right were consolidated and garrisoning old German trenches from M.21.a.2.4 to M.20.a.7.2, making a junction to M.13.a.9.0.

Casualties – Killed 8, Wounded (estimated) 33 other ranks.
