Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The 100th Bn MGC were in position near Bernes in support of an operation by 46th Division to breakthrough the Hindenburg Line and capture the St. Quentin Canal near Bellicourt. They were given firing orders and at 06.00 began firing at enemy positions. Soon after they opened fire the German army responded with a heavy artillery and machine gun barrage which caused casualties including Howard. By 8.30am, against all the pre-attack odds when it was considered a suicide mission, the 1st/6th South Staffs had broken through the Hindenburg line and captured the canal. The story of the attack can be read here.
