Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as being killed in action on 23 Jul 1917. The 1st Battalion war diary places them in Crete Trench near Fampoux. The war diary entry for the 23rd is transcribed below.

Trenches - 23/7/1917: Fine day, fairly quiet. Both enemy and our aeroplances active. One enemy plane shot down by our A.A Guns & fell in enemy lines. Quiet night. END

The Battalion Statement of Casualties records there being 4 killed and 5 wounded men on 23/7/1917.
