Circumstances of Death

William is listed as being killed in action on 30 Jun 1916. The 12th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Trenches at Potijze Chateau/Wood - 30 Jun 1916: At 7.30am our guns commenced bombarding positions behind German front line trenches. Enemy replied at once and shelled our front line trenches heavily with guns and trench mortars. One trench mortar fell on a Lewis Gun emplacement & killed 6 of the team. Bombardment ceased at 10am. Remainder of the day was quiet.

Casualties: 6 killed, 4 wounded. END

NB: In his service record William is listed as a Machine Gunner and therefore it is safe to assume that he was one of the six Lewis Gun team who were killed.
