Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion were in trenches SE of Arras and they and their Bridgade were tasked with preventing the enemy from withdrawing troops from front lines positions so that they could be moved elsewhere - this was 4 days before the start of the Battle of the Somme. On the day Alfred was killed the enemy had been attacked with gas shells which the enemy replied to with an artillery barrage that killed 5 men including Alfred. The war diary does not give specific locations but the diary of the 9tn Bn Rifle Brigade whom they had relieved in the trenches gives some points detailed on the map below.
