Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The Battle of Festubert, the first British night action of World War One, began on 9 May 1915 with the aim of capturing German trenches in support of a French attack further south at Vimy Ridge. Charles was killed in the action of 15-16 May 1915 which saw the Battalion attacking and holding enemy breastworks during which time the Battalion lost 395 men. The battlefield was so heavily swept by enemy shellfire that his body was never found. His name is commemorated on the Le Touret near Armentières
