john is listed as being killed in action on 11 Sep 1918. The battalion war diary entries for the 10th & 11th September are transcribed below. Heudicourt - 10th: Situation cleared up as follows. D Coy W.22.c, A, B& C Coys Railway Cutting W.23.a. Bn HQ Brickyard at Heudicourt. 2 Coys of 12/13 N.F. {Newfoundland Regt?] relieved 8pm. Preparation for attack on line from Chapel Redoubt to R.23.d - part of Yellow Line. Heudicourt - 11th: Battalion attacked yellow line successfully - 50 prisoners and 6 M.G's taken. Touch on S obtained with London Regt. Touch with N - Wilts Regt established following night. Casualties: 2/Lt Hawkes died of wounds; 2/Lt Beesley & 2/Lt West w-in-w. OR K, W & M 50. END |
