Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
War diary shows that the Company was in the front lines at Villers-Brettnoneux when they were subject of an intense artillery barrage followed by an attack in mass which was held up and stopped by barbed wire defenses and machine gun fire. Herbert was wounded, along with 13 other men, and died the following day in a Field Ambulance. 2nd Cpl John Henry Ashbourne who is named on the Hatton and Stratford Holy Trinitiy War Memorials was one of 8 men killed in the same attack.
