Miliary Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal Awards
Ernest was awarded the Military Medal (MM), for bravery in the field, which was Gazetted on 17 Jul 1917 (click here)
He was later awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) which was awarded on 22 Oct 1917 and gazetted on 28 Jan 1918 (click here) the citation for which reads:-
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's trenches. He personally captured two prisoners after a hand-to-hand struggle, and showed great courage and determination"

Kelynge was listed as being killed in action on 31 May 1918 and the war diary for that day is transcribed below along with a newspaper report of his death.

Near Sarry - Fri 31.5.1918: Heavily shelled, Battn compelled to withdraw about 11.00am under heavy barrage to position overlooking Ville-en-Tardenois-Chambrecy Road. 7.00pm a further withdrawal of about 800 yards to a more favourable position necessary. END
Newspaper Obituary
FORMER RAILWAY EMPLOYEE KILLED
News has been received by his parents at Berkswell of the death, killed in action, on France on May 31st of Sergt. Ernest Harold LONG R.W.R who held the D.C.M and Military Medal. He was 30 years of age and before joining up in Sept 1914 he was employed at the Coventry Goods Station. He went to France in October 1915 and, after being in hospital in this country he returned to the front in April.
