Wilfred is listed as dying of wounds on 19 Aug 1915. The 3rd Battalion war diary shows that the Battalion were in the trenches near La Brique for 16 days between 4th & 18th August will no details and they were relieved on the 19th. The very brief war diary entries are transcribed below along with the transcription of a letter sent to Wilfred's mother by his Company Commander. War Diary4th to 18th August: In trenches, Le Brique 19th August: Relieved night of 19th/20th by 1st K.S.L.I., 16th Infantry Brigade. Relief completed by 12.30am on 20th. Marched to bivouacs at Bivouaes, Ouderdom. Killed 2/Lieut Wilfred James Moon; wounded Capt. C.S. Morice. R&F [Rank and File]: 1 wounded. Letter from Capt. Ellis to MotherDear Mrs Moon Your son was a splendid fellow & devoted to his work & in him I had one of the best & most competent of officers. He was extremely popular with all men & officers and his death will, I am sure, be felt throughout the Battalion. It was on the night of the 18th about 11.45 p.m. that he was killed while out on patrol work in front of the trenches. He was immediately brought in & I can assure you that everything possible was done for him. He was living but unconscious when brought in & the poor fellow expired a few minutes afterwards. It was a glorious & noble death Mrs Moon and his King & Country may well be proud of him. Trust in God will be with you & comfort you in your great trouble. I remain |
