Alfred is listed as being killed in action on 17th July 1918. The very brief 24th Brigade war diary entries for the period 15th to 18th July are transcribed below and mention Alfred by name. Please note that the writing is very feint and two words marked ? proved almost impossible to read. 28.G.19.g.1.3 [S of Poperinghe] - 15/7/1918: Quiet day, harassing fire as normal? 16/7/1918: Quiet day, harassing fire as normal? 17/7/1918: Positions for the defence of three rear lines have been selected and allotted to Batteries. These positions must be known to all Officers and the units to them be committed? No 16564 S/Sgt Fitter A.G. Nixon HQ, killed. 18/7/1918: Counter preparation shoot by all Batteries of Right Guns 60 rounds per gun. Zero hour 2.45am |
