Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The war diary for 9 Oct 1917 states Tower Hamlets [near Gheruveld] 5.20am 'attack by our troops on left of our sector, simultaneous the three batts in front line (112th Bde) with close objectives. In the event of enemy retiring [11th] battalion to move forward (SE direction) by bounds for about 1500 yards by means of fighting patrols (4 platoons full strength) no development'.
5.45 am "Intense artillery retaliatory bombardment lasting 24 hours. Points most shelled BN HQ. RAP. BASSEVILLBEEK to DUMBARTON DUMP"
Albert was most likely killed during the bombardment noted above. Alberts brother Joseph was also killed during these actions.
Private Frank Silverster of Alderminster was also killed on this day.
