Circumstances of Death

Henry is listed as being killed in action on 7th November 1917. The 12th Battalion war diary entries for the period 6th to 8th November are transcribed below.

Sterling Tunnel – 6 Nov 1917: Battalion in trenches etc at Tor Tot & Sterling Tunnel less one Coy who had gone forward to Cameron Covert.

Battalion moved forward about 11am and relieved 1/E Surrey Regt in left sector Veldhoek & Tower with Bn HQ in Jerk House.

Enemy’s artillery was very active during the morning and several casualties occurred during relief.

Veldhoek Front Line – 7 Nov 1917: Battalion in Front Line, usual artillery activity during the day, nothing of importance to report.

20 OR casualties during the day.

The battalion was relieved on night of 7th & 8th Nov by 14th Bn Royal Warwickshire Regt, 13th Infantry Brigade and withdrew to huts and shelter in Bedford House [Ypres]

Bedford House  – 8 Nov 1917: Battalion in huts and shelter in Bedford House. Bn cleaning up and inspection of arms etc.
