Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 6 Aug 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The brief 13th Battalion war diary entries for the period 3rd to 7th August are transcribed below: 3rd August: Moved to front line approx S.3.d.0.4 to S.3.d.9½.½ with supporting trenches in rear. The trenches were for the most part shallow and contained many unburied dead. 4th August: Heavy bombardment during the night. 101st Bde on our left attacked with four companies a position of the intermediate line at 1.10am & secured the left of their objective. They had to withdraw owing to difficulty of communications 5th August: Nothing to report 6th August: Were relieved at 5am by 10 RF [10Bn Royal Fusiliers] and move to our old line in Mametz Wood. Enemy shelling very active from about midnight until 6am on Mametx Wood and on the valleys S & W. 7th August: Nothing to report. 8th August: Artillery both sides fairly active. |
