Circumstances of Death
|
William was part of the Garrison at Kut-al-Amarah which surrended to the Turkish Army on 29th April 1916 after a near six month siege now known as the Siege of Kut. The 12,000 survivors of the Siege were then put on a 1200 mile forced march called the Kut Death March from Kut to concentration camps in Turkey, as described in the YouTube video below. Around 4000 to 5000 of the men died during the march and many others died of disease whilst in Turkish Concentration Camps. William's pension card states that he died of disease whilst a PoW but we have not been able to establish any further information about William's death or place of internment. |
