Edward is listed as being killed in action on 25th March 1918. The 2nd/6th Battalion war diary entries for the period 23rd to 26th March 1918 are transcribed below.
Billiancourt - 23 Mar 1918: Being almost surrounded Col. Davidson withdrew his force at 2am. They rested at Matigny and reached Voyennes without loss at 8am, they then joined a further party of the 2/6
This other party of 120 men under 2 officers was collected at Voyennes and at 4.30am on the 23rd was marched to Languevoisin reaching there about 5am, they then made of Billancourt where they arrived at 2.30pm. Buverchy – 24 Mar 1918: At 11.30am the Battalion, then about 140 strong, left Billancourt under Col. Davidson and occupied the Canal du Nord on the west bank behind Buverchy. Moyencourt – 25 Mar 1918: At 5pm when forces on our right gave way they had to retire. Col. Davidson collected all the troops he could in Moyencourt and put up a fight until wounded. The remainder of the Battalion retired to Villers aux Erables, arriving there on the 26th. Villers aux Erables – 26 Mar 1918: In evening marched and dug in front of Maison Blanche, where they were joined by the details from the rear, consisting of 8 officers and 140 men. |
