Circumstances Leading to Death - excerpt from The Story Of The Royal Warwickshire Regiment - By C. L. Kingsford

The war diary entry for the day Roland was killed is brief and states that they were in the trenches at Auchonvillers and part of the trench was hit by enemy shell fire at about 4pm. Later in the day the battalion was relieved by the 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment and the diary states they suffered 4 casualties 'going out' of the trenches including 2 wounded officers. The monthly summary shows that total casualties for the day were 39 including 3 other ranks killed, one of who would have been Roland.
