Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

William is listed as being killed in action on 16 Aug 1916. The war diary for the day is transcribed below.

Capture of Orchard Trench and portion of Wood Lane

W of Delville Wood – Aug 1916 – 18th: the Battalion on the left of Bde & K.R.R on our right. Bombardment all day until 2.45pm when intense final bombardment commenced for 5 mins during when A&D Coys crept forward in barrage and assaulted at 2.50pm.

A Coy captured their objective and two machine guns, put out covering party and consolidated assisted by C Coy (support). D Coy were not as successful, they had no good trench to start from and were swept down before barrage ended with the result that their 200 yards of Wood Lane were not reached. Their assault was also hindered by the fact that the Bde on our left were quite unsuccessful.

C Coy & A Coy bombed up and cleared 35 yards of Wood Lane where they established a bombing block.

D Coy had many casualties.

B rendered valuable assistance carrying up stores and ammunition and material for consolidating.

Casualties 1 Off (Capt W.E. Pope D Coy) killed. 5 officers wounded, 62 other ranks killed, 191 other ranks wounded, 11 other ranks missing. END
