William is now listed as being killed in action on 20th September 1918, having been initially reported as missing in action. His death was not accepted until sometime after the 20 November 1918 when the family wrote to the Red Cross inquiring as to whether he was a PoW. The 10th Battalion war diary entries for the period 19th to 21st are transcribed below. Front Line near Essars – 19.9.18: Quiet, orders received to attack on the morrow. Artillery & T.M’s wire cutting. Leave: A/Capt & Adjt H.J. Shaw & 1 OR proceeded on leave Front Line near Essars – 20.9.18: C & D Coys attacked at 6.30am & made good progress taking all objectives and 79 prisoners. Enemy counter-attacked – heavy casualties particularly in Officers & Sergeants, compelled C & D Coys to evacuate most of the captured positions. Bn was relieved the same night by 8/Glosters and proceeded to line of ? in Brigade Support. Leave: 2 Other Ranks proceeded on leave Support Lines near Essars – 21.9.18: Quiet, vicinity of BN HQ shelled. One or two casualties amongst Coys owing to the fact that artillery were in action in the immediate vicinity. Leave: 1 OR proceeded on leave |
