Circumstances of Death

The details of how and when Herbert was killed are a little confusing, he is officially listed as dying on 24 Oct 1918.

  • Herberts pension card states that he was killed accidentally whilst on active service.
  • His register of effects states that he died "in the field".
  • War Office Casualty List 5749 Part VI of December 16th 1918 lists Herbert as previously being reported as wounded but now reported as Accidentally killed. We have not been able to find the original Casualty list.
  • CWGC Records show that Herbert was originally buried in Haspres Communal Cemetery (German Ext) after his death on 24 Oct 1918.
  • The 32nd Brigade RFA War Diary places them at Haspres in the days leading up to Herbert's death but no mention is made of any accidents that may have led to his death. There are no recorded casualties on the 23rd, 24th or 25th October 1918 with two men reported wounded on 22nd Oct when the Bde HQ was hit by hostile shellfire.
