Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the day he was killed John was in the lines at Montauban Alley in the Longueval sector where his battalion was involved in the digging of trenches. The war diary records that they were shelled constantly and that 11 men were wounded, 3 had shell shock and 1 was missing. It is assumed that John was the one marked as missing as his body was never recovered. The following day the battalion was to attack a part of Delville Wood.
