Frank is listed as being killed in action on 25 Mar 1918. The 2nd Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below. Epenancourt - 25 Mar 1918 - In the Line: During the past 24 hours D Company formed a defensive flank to the Sherwoods and the line to the North but it was unavoidable that a large gap should exist between C & D Company. The 4th Yorks were put into this gap but were really too late to affect the situation. The enemy made a determined attack on our right causing us to withdraw a considerable distance. A Company held their position till surrounded and had to fight their way back they nevertheless held till an orderly retirement could be effected. This whole reguard action at very close quarters offered the enemy a very stubborn resistence & enabled the whole line to withdraw on the Railway Embankment near Marchelepot. Later about 9.30pm the entire garrison of the Railway had to withdraw to a line in front of Ablaincourt. END |
