Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
William is listed as being killed on 21 Sep 1917, at that time the battalion where in front line trenches NE of Elverdinghe and the war diary records a heavy enemy barrage and intermittent shelling. A newspaper report stated that William and two other men were sleeping in their trench when a shell exploded near to them killed William.
