Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the day he was killed Edward's battalion was moved into position in the "H" trench system south of Gavrelle ready for an attack on enemy lines with the objective of capturing Greenland Hill located directly east of their positions. They then moved into the attack position around Chili Trench and began their attack, however after gaining ground the attack ground to a halt short of the objective because of very heavy fire from Chemical Works to their south and the failure of other units to advance to their north. The battalion was forced to dig in on a line marked on the map below and they consolidated and held that line before being relieved in the early hours of the following day.
