Harry is listed as being killed in action on 6 Jul 1915. The Stratford Herald reported that he was killed by a rifle grenade which fell in his trench, badly wounding him in the back, and breaking his left leg. The battalion war diary for the 1st to 6 Jul 1915 is transcribed below. Billets at Vendin-les-Bethune: 1st to 5th July 1915: In billets at Vendin-les-Bethune. Vendin-les-Bethune: 5th July 1915: Battalion paraded at 2pm marched via Bethune and relieved 2nd Bn K.K.R. in the trenches S of the Bethune-La Bassee Road and E of Cambrin. Trenches East of Cambrin - 6th July 1915: During the night 5th & 6th the enemy maintained a constant bombardment of our trenches with bombs and rifle grenades which continued at intervals during the day. Casualties: 2 Other Ranks killed : 7 Other Ranks wounded. END. |
