Ernest is listed as dying of gun shot wounds to the chest on 28 Jan 1916 at the No 17 Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek. We are not sure on which day Ernest was wounded but as he died at the Casualty Clearing Station it would have been a relatively short time before he died. The 5th Battalion War Diary for the period 20th to 28th January 1916 is transcribed below:

Elverdinghe - 23-1-16: Relieved 5th KSLI in left sector, Colne Valley, handed to right sector - platoons back on Canal. A Coy on left B Coy on right, C Coy at Pellisher, D Coy at Malakoff. F31 heavily trench mortared - no damage
St. Jean 24th to 28th
St. Jean - 24-1-16: Heavy trench mortaring and bombardment of French in retaliation for their shelling. Some mortars on Canal Bank N of Bridge 72. E28 blown in by trench mortars, ineffectual measures to silence. M-G & Rifle fire against our aeroplanes - no results. Our snipers shot at rifles. M-G & Snipers more active at night.
St. Jean - 25-1-16: German trenches in B.12.b & C.7.a and opposite E.28 bombarded by French & us. Weak relatiaton. M-G & snipers more active at night, E35, 34, 33 &E28 evacuated at daylight and reoccupied at night without incident.
St. Jean - 26-1-16: Further bombardment of French trench opposite E28. Practically no retaliation. M-G & Snipers quieter at night. Kaisers birthday. Attack on Salient expected by GHQ - nothing happened.
St. Jean - 27-1-16: Shelling of Canal Bank - little damage - relieved by 9th K.R.R and went to B Huts.
St. Jean - 28-1-16: Rest
