William is listed as being killed in action on 19 May 1917, having originally been reported as missing. The battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below. Arras - In the Trenches - 19 May 1917: Attack carried out in accordance wity attached B.O.17. The attack fails owing to severe casualties from M.G. fire. Centre party reach their objective but are outnumbered. Lieut Aitcheson effect[ed] a lodgement in Hook Trench with about 20 men but nothing more is heard of them. Casualties: Capt Osman, 2 Lt McGrane; Lt Hepworth killed; 2nd Lt Somers died of wounds; 2 Lt Clancy; Lt ? missing, Lt Hall missing, Lt Aitcheson wounded & missing, 2 Lt Graham wounded. Other Ranks 192 K, W & M. |
