John is listed as being killed in action on 16 May 1917 by the premature explosion of a shell in the gun he was manning. The war diary for that day is transcribed below: Map Reference [57c.]H.33.b.12.90 - East of Arras - 16th May 1917: Fired 254 rounds during the day. Premature in bore of gun no 691. No 110960 Gunner J.W. Gould killed. No 73695 A/Bomb J Hamill died of wounds in No 142 Field Ambulance. Both buried in Military Cemetery at [57c]G.26.b.8.6.
