William is listed as being killed in action on 18 March 1918. The brief 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 17th to 19th March are transcribed below, and it looks as if William was in a working party when he was killed. 17th March 1915 – Armentieres: The Battalion marched past Commander of 2nd Army near Pont Nieppe in afternoon. Orders for change have been cancelled. Battalion returned to Point 63 and billeted. 18th March 1915 – Point 63: B & D Coys found working parties under R.E. 2nd Lieut Cockburn joined and was posted to D Coy 19th Match 1915 – Point 63: A & C Coys did work under R.E. B & C Coys left billet at Piggeries and went into Petit Monque and Hunting Lodge. |
