William is listed as being killed in action on 16 Jul 1916. The brief, and difficult to read, 2nd/7th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Trenches at Farquissart 16 VII 16: 2/6th took over left half of our line by 6p,m. D Coy closed in to the R to leave room for C Coy on there left. B Coy moved from Reserve line to act as Support Coy in the front lines. B Coy in Reserve in B Line.

White House was shelled all this morning & Battn HQ Mess was blown up about 11.30am. Bttn HQ’s moved to ? HQ’s at 2pm and 2/6th HQ’s moved to? front at 7pm.

Preparations for the impending attack on the morrow were continued with all night. Major Wilson & 5 Officers left as Reserve for La Gorgue. END
