Circumstances of Death
|
George died of pneumonia whilst a prisoner of war in the German Miltary Hospital at Tincourt on 20th July 1918. This information is taken from Red Cross Records. Click here for the original. Please note that the CWGC website records George's date of death as 20th July 1918 but its own Grave Concentration report and the Red Cross record (both below) show that he died two days later on July 22nd 1918 Red Cross Record
This roughly translates as "Born on August 10, 1998 in Withybrook, died on July 22, 1918 of pneumonia in the military hospital in Tincourt, buried there in the honorary cemetery, grave B 10" We have been unable to find the normal Red Cross record which would have recorded the date and place of his original capture. However the 13th Battalion war diary places them at Villers Faucon which is about 7km NE of Tincourt. Tincourt was rapidly overun by the Germans on or about 23rd March at the start of their Spring Offensive and at the time it was home to a number of Casualty Clearing Stations who had to evacuate leaving their wounded patients behind and it is entirely feasible that he captured there but the lack of his service record means that it cannot be confirmed or otherwise.
