Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 21st October 1916 during the attack on Stuff Trench. The 11th Battalion war diary entries for the period 20th to 22nd October 1916 are transcribed below.

Redoubt Sector – 20 Oct 1916: Battn relieved the 13th Sussex Regt in the Redoubt Sector (Rt Subsection). Advance party left at 7am & main body at 8am. Casual march to billets at Aveluy & employed in carrying rations etc to front line.

Redoubt Sector – 21 Oct 1916: The Battn capture German front line (Stuff Trench). B & C Coys assaulted A & D Coys reinforced them in the new line. Heavy casualties were inflicted on the enemy & many prisoners taken.

2/Lt’s Ivens, Salt & Doogan killed; 2/Lt’s ? and Hayes wounded. 11 OR’s killed, 186 OR’s wounded and 77 OR missing.

Aveluy Wood – 22 Oct 1916: The Battn was relieved & marched to south side of Aveluy Wood where they bivouacked under shelters & tents.
