Gordon is listed as being killed in action on 10th August 1917. The 1st/7th Battalion war diary entries for the period 8th to 11th August are transcribed below and indicate that Gordon was actually killed on the 11th August. Canal Bank – 8 Aug 1917: C Camp was vacated by the Battalion which moved up to Canal Bank and relieved the 5th Bn Gloucester Regt. Canal Bank – 9 Aug 1917: Remained in Canal Bank Canal Bank – 10 Aug 1917: At dusk the battalion moved forward and relieved the 5th R War R in the front line in the St. Julien sector. The relief was carried out without any casualties to this unit. The 6th Bn Gloucester Regt were on the left, the 2nd Inniskilling Reg on the right. Canal Bank – 11 Aug 1917: The enemy shelling and sniping was very heavy and active. B Coy HQ were blown in causing two officers and 10 OR casualties. During the night the line was advanced slightly to a position about 100 yards east of the Steenbeek. Posts were also established on the St. Julien – Winnipeg and St. Julien-Poelcappelle Road. The enemy used considerable quantities of mustard oil gas shells against us. |
