Warwick Advertiser - 1st September 1917

An officer writes to Mr. Merritt of 96 West Street, Warwick, informing him that his son Sergt. R.H. Merritt, Military Medalist, was killed on July 21st. He was struck by a piece of shrapnel while he was entering a dug-out and died in the arms of the officers five minutes afterwards. The officer adds:

“Your son was an excellent soldier, a staunch supporter of the battery and admired by all officers, N.C.O’s and men. It is only a few weeks since I had the honour and pleasure of recommending him for gallantry in the field, and the battery were not slow in showing their appreciation of his award.
