Circumstances of Death

Gerald is listed as being killed in action on 8th November 1918. The 10th Battalion war diary entries for the period 7th to 9th November are transcribed below.

Bry – 7.11.1918: An attack was made on a two company front – A & B in front line & C & D in support. 8th Bn The Gloster Regt in reserve.

Zero 0600 hrs: The attack was very successful, no enemy being encountered, advanced to line E of Bois de Verdain. Battalion HQ at Chateau de Warincamp.

Casualties: 2nd Lt Robinson wounded
Leave: 2nd Lt Sutton & 10 OR proceeded on leave.

E of Bois de Verdain – 8.11.1918: The attack was continued C & D Coys being in front with A & B in support. The advance was continued to E of Malplaquet where the Bttn was held up by enemy MG fire.

Casualties: Capt. A.E. Stehn killed; 2/Lt W.F. Hyde killed; 2/Lt N. Cleave killed
Leave: 1 OR proceeded on leave.

E of Malplaquet – 9.11.1918: A fresh attack to the flank was made which was successful, no enemy being encountered. Zero 0730 hrs. The II Division passed through and at 1100 hrs the Battn became Reserve and was billeted at Malplaquet.

Draft: Lieut Walker and 62 OR’s, 5 rejoining, joined the Battn.
Leave: 1 OR proceeded on leave.
