Circumstances of Death

Ernest is listed as being killed in action by a sniper on 20th May 1915. His service record states that the was shot throught the head and the South Warwickshire Roll of Honour states that Ernest who shot when got caught in the crossfire between two opposing snipers. Te 13th Battalion war diary entries for the 20th May is transcribed below.

Quinque Road - 20 May 1915: The Battalion advanced from its position in the old British trenches at Indian Village as per Order. The advance was made under very heavy shell fire from the enemy. The attack of the 16th Battalion being successful No 1 Coy of the 13th Battalion immediately took up the position taken by them, strengthened it in every way possible.

Nos 1, 2 & 3 Coys occupied the firing line and No 4 Coy in support in trenches immediately to rear. In conjunction with the Engineers work was carried out all night, every means being taken to consolidate the position by constructing traverses etc.
