Circumstances of Death

Alexander is listed as being killed in action on 7th October 1916. The Z / 2nd Division TMB war diary for the 7th October is transcribed below and confirms Alexanders death and burial on that day.

near La Signy Farm, Serre Sector - 07 Oct 1916 - 12 noon: Open fire with Nos 2, 3 & 4. Fire 62 rounds with excellent success. Heavy enemy retaliation especially on old No 1 gun & on No 2. No 2 gets direct hit. Gunners Kemp & Collier both killed outright and the third man, Gnr Cuthbert slightly wounded in thigh.

Gap cut at K.29.d.2.8 & K.29.d.2.9

2am [8th]: After returning from burying the two Gunners who were killed receive report that large enemy working party had been seen in the vicinity repairing wire. No apparent attempt had been made to disperse them with machine gun fire. Ascertain that they had by this time gone back. Orders not to fire due to Infantry relief.
