Circumstances of Death

Frederick is listed as being killed in action 10th March 1917. The brief 14th Battalion war diary entries for the 9th to 13th March are transcribed below and indicate that Frederick was killed by machine gun fire whilst out working on barbed wiring.

Givenchy (left) – 9 Mar 1917: 1 other rank killed by rifle fire. 1 other rank wounded by rifle fire.

2/Lts Hendry & Pocock wounded by bombs whilst out examining the enemy’s wire. Both these officers showed cool judgement & were particularly lucky to get back to our lines.
