George is listed as having died of wounds (caused by an enemy rifle grenade) on August 2nd 1916 and he was buried at Avnes-le-Comte Communal Cemetery which was used for burials. The 1st Battalion war diary entry for the 2nd August 1916 is transcribed below and is self-explanatory. Trenches near Roclincourt - 2 Aug 1916: A fine hot day. Enemy quiet except for [a] few rifle grenades & T.M. bombs. N end of Roclincourt shelled by a few 4.2 in afternoon. 2/Lt Jenner wounded by a rifle brigade, other casualties nil. Admissions to hospital 4. 2/Lt Dennis left for Aubigny fort interview with Director R.F.C. Enemy bombarded head of Bogey Avenue doing considerable damage. Cpl Jackson wounded by rifle grenade. 2/Lt Bullstrode wounded. Admissions to hospital 3. |
