Circumstances of Death

Sydney is listed as dying of wounds on or about 12th October 1917 having initially been reported as wounded and missing in action. His service record indicates that he was wounded in the thigh and the events of the day caused him to be left behind in a trench to await an evacuation which seemingly never came and he subsequently died of his wound. The very brief 49th Battalion war diary entries for the period 10th to 13th October 1917 are transcribed below.

Steenvorde - 10 Oct 1917: Battalion holding line, connecting up and generally improving defences.

Steenvorde - 11 Oct 1917: 51st Battalion took over from 49th Bn left half of the line as per map attached. A & D B 49th Bn moved back to close support.

Steenvorde - 12 Oct 1917: Bn Holding line

Steenvorde – 13 Oct 1917: Bn Holding line. [Overnight 13/14th] Bn took over front line and close support. Bn moved to Belgian Chateau area.
