Frederick's original Service number was 349 which was isssued to him as a member of the 1st/1st Territorials sometime between 22 Feb 1913 when # 321 was issued and 21 Jan 1914 when # 392 was issued. Frederick is listed as one of the men who was Mobilised on 5th Aug 1914 at Leamington
Circumstances of Death

Frederick is listed as being killed in action on 9 Oct 1917. The 15th Brigade war diary for that day is transcribed below. Wood House, Ypres - In the field - 9.10.17: 29th Division attacked the enemy and all objectives were taken. Our FOO's? 2/Lts Palethorpe and Howels were killed outside Martins Mill just before zero hour. A very heavy barrage was put down on the Steenbeek at the commencement of the attack. END NB: Although no details of casualties to NCO's and men are given 2nd Lt Palethorpe was also buried at Canada Farm in the same row as Frederick on 9th Oct along with Bombardiers William Henry Nichols; and Bertram Francis Taylor both of the 1st/1st Warwick Battery. No mention of this incident is made in the History of the 1/1 Warwickshire Royal Horse Artillery book although Frederick is named named amongst the fallen of the Battery in WW1. |
