Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 20th August 1916. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 16th to 21st August are transcribed below. Railway Copse - 16 Aug 1916- 11.30am: Left Railway Copse and marched back to Back Wood. Battalion bivouacked in an orchard. Back Wood – 17 Aug 1916: In reserve Back Wood – 18 Aug 1916: As above [In reserve] Back Wood – 19 Aug 1916: As above [In reserve] Trenches High Wood – 20 Aug 1916: Battalion marched at platoon intervals to relieve 2nd K R R C as right trench Battalion. Front line held by A Coy with 2 Lewis Guns and 10 men in the Advanced Post. C Coy in 2nd line running up to High Wood. B Coy in Chester Alley and D Coy in Mill Street. A Coy advanced position was attacked and driven back 30 yards where a position in shell holes was taken up. Casualties: 2/Lt A. Alcock killed; 2/Lt E.A. Cockett wounded. OR Killed 12 & 35 wounded. Trenches High Wood – 21 Aug 1916: Heavy shelling of front and support lines throughout the night and at intervals during the day. |
