William is listed as being killed in action on 8th July 1918. The 14th Battalion war diary entries for the period 7th to 9th July are transcribed below.

Nieppe Forest - 7 Jul 1918: 18 OR report for duty 7 of whom have previously been on the Battalion. 2/Lt N Rolles reports for duty.

Nieppe Forest - 8 Jul 1918: 2/Lt C.Y.F Manning reports for duty. 14 OR killed and 16 wounded by ariel bomb which fell on bivouacs in the transport lines soon after midnight.

1 OR killed and 2 OR wounded in the line.

15 R War R relieve the battalion in the line, the battalion marched to Spresiana Camp in the ?. Cpl (or Cpt) Roberts died of wounds recd on 29.6.18
